Babies-(0 to 12 months) Always use diluted oils. Lavender has been used safely on babies for years. You can put a drop in the bath or a drop on their favorite toy or pillow to relax.
(I like to back everything up for medical safety. Here's more information at WebMd.)
Use 1 drop of essential oil in 1 tbs. of carrier oils like almond or coconut oil (not mineral or baby oil) to help a fussy baby. Baby oil can be harsher on the skin then the carrier oils.
1 year to 5 years old- same as above except use 2 drops of lavender per 1 tbs. of carrier oil.
6 to 12 years old- use 1 drop of essential oil per 2 tsp. of carrier oil.
Pregnant- use 1 drop of essential oil per 2 tsp. of carrier oil. Again there is different opinions if essential oil should be used.
Normal adult- 2 to 5 drops of essential oil per tsp. of carrier oil. (1 tsp. = 5 ml)
Elderly- 1/2 strength of adult.
If you have asthma, don't use steam inhalation.
A warm bath with 6 drops of lavender oil in the water you relax and sleep.
Another great thing to do to go to sleep is to place lavender essential into a diffuser. The amount and way depends on the kind of diffuser you have, so go according to instructions. Diffusers break up the lavender into tiny little droplets that fill your bedroom with such a wonderful scent.
Lavender oil is also is a disinfectant. There's actually a study showing that lavender oil inhibited growth of both MSSA and MRSA by direct contact.
Lavender can be rubbed onto the inside of the wrist, temples or just below the ribs. Just make sure you don't get any kind of essential oil in your eyes. It's absorbed into the skin and you get benefits from the physical properties of the essential oil. It helps you calm down and relax and also acts as an anti-depressant. The American College of Healthcare Sciences has excellent information on clinical studies. One was using lavender oil in a blend. (Taehan Kanho Hakhoe Chi. 2008 Aug;38(4):493-502.)
Here’s the good news: all the patients who received the aromatherapy hand massage reported less pain and depression. However, no tests were done on the separate essential oils. The only conclusion that can be made is that aromatherapy massage with this essential oil blend is more effective for pain and depression management than massage alone.
A study conducted in Taiwan in 2011 ( Aromatherapy Benefits Autonomic Nervous System Regulation for Elementary School Faculty in Taiwan. .)provided clearer and more powerful evidence how lavender helps anxiety. The authors selected elementary school teachers, who are known to constantly work under significant stress, and used an inhalation of bergamot C. aurantium var. bergamia essential oil as the method of administration; they focused on the physiological stress signals that are easy to record and straightforward to interpret. They found that even a 10-minute-long weekly inhalation of aromatherapy resulted in a significant reduction of blood pressure and heart rate, and drove autonomic nervous activity toward a balanced state. In addition, participants with moderate and high degrees of anxiety benefited more than the light anxiety group.
A study in 2007 (Int J Cardiol. 2008 Sep 26;129(2):193-7. Epub 2007 Aug 8.) also showed that lavender aromatherapy reduced serum cortisol—which plays a central role in the body’s response to stress—in healthy men. The researchers concluded: “These findings suggest that lavender aromatherapy has relaxation effects and may have beneficial acute effects on coronary circulation.”
Patch test- If you're not sure if you're allergic to an essential oil you should do a patch test. Put a diluted drop on your wrist and if the area gets red or itches then wash it off right away with cold water, and don't use that oil. This is an important part of essential oil safety.
Some oils can cause photosensitivity. (Sunlight and tanning booths) Lavender is not known to do this.
How can you know the Essential Oils you're purchasing are the best quality?
The manufacturer should be able to tell you the botanical plant source where the oil was extracted.
The manufacturer should use for testing purity:
- GCMS testing (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry)
- Chirality testing
- Heavy metal/pesticide/herbicide testing
- Organoleptic testing
- Optical rotation and refractive index testing
- Specific gravity testing
- Microbial testing
Don't be misled by the exorbitantly high prices that other companies charge for their oils. Just because they’re charging an outrageous price, doesn’t mean that their oils are of superior quality.
I've found a company leveraging three decades of experience developing natural health and wellness products. It's introduced a new line of premium essential oils. The new brand, of Essential Oils, consists of 22 single oils, five exclusive blends and two carrier oils—fractionated coconut and sweet almond.
The customers equally benefit from pricing that is up to 50 percent below market leaders.
The Essential Oils product array offers these single essential oils:
• Cinnamon Bark
• Jasmine Absolute
• Ylang ylang
