Groups push J&J on toxins in baby shampoos

Several health campaigners are crying foul over Johnson & Johnson's famous "no more tears" baby shampoos.
According to a coalition of health and environmental groups, two chemicals deemed harmful to babies remain in Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoos even though the company already makes versions without them.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has been trying for 2 1/2 years to get the world's largest health care company to remove trace amounts of potentially cancer-causing chemicals, dioxane and quaternium-15, a substance that releases formaldehyde, from Johnson's Baby Shampoo, one of the company's signatures products.
J&J has maintained that it is reducing or gradually phasing out the chemicals, but has not directly responded to the campaign's demands.
The group, in a new campaign released Tuesday called "Baby's Tub is Still Toxic," is now urging consumers to boycott Johnson & Johnson baby products until the company agrees to remove the chemicals from its baby products sold worldwide.
J& J responded in a statement that formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are safe and approved by regulators in the United States and other countries, but also acknowledged that the company is phasing them out of its baby products. The company also said that it is reformulating baby products to reduce the level of dioxane below detectable levels.
Researchers have found evidence that formaldehyde is associated with nose, lung and blood cancers. Health experts say that exposing children to such chemicals at a very vulnerable period of development may be dangerous and harmful.
