FDA Warns Avon and Lancome on Wrinkle-Product Claims - an article of interest

I found this article and just thought it brings to mind that you can't believe all the hyped up claims of some skin care products.

FDA Warns Avon on Wrinkle-Product Claims -

Last month the FDA warned L'Oréal SA's Lancome unit on claims made on some of its antiwrinkle products.

This time the FDA is going after Avon for its marketing of some products primarily part of the firm's Anew skin care brand, which the company says on its website is a $1 billion brand. The agency sent Avon a warning letter dated Oct. 5. The letter was posted on FDA's website Tuesday.

In a statement, Avon said it is "committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where we do business," and intends "to work with the FDA to resolve this matter."

The FDA said it reviewed Avon's website in August and looked at claims associated with Anew Clinical Advanced Wrinkle Corrector, Anew Reversalist Night Renewal Cream, Anew Reversalist Renewal Serum, Anew Clinical Thermafirm Face Lifting Cream and Solutions Liquid Bra Toning Gel. The agency said the claims "indicate that these products are intended to affect the structure or any function of the human body, rendering them drugs" under federal law.

For example, FDA took issue with claims that Anew Clinical Thermafirm Face Lifting Cream "is formulated to fortify damaged tissue with new collagen," and helps "tighten the connections between skin's layers."
The FDA said Avon needs to fix the violations outlined in the letter.

Antiwrinkle products usually claim to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but the FDA is taking issue with claims that go further and discuss things like the stimulation of cells or reactivating the skin's repair process.

The FDA's letter cited claims made in connection with Anew Clinical Advanced Wrinkle Corrector, which in part, state the product is "formulated to boost shock-absorbing proteins to help strengthen skin's support layers."
